Service with a Smile: Markisha’s Beginnings
Markisha began her Harbor Freight career in a unique way: it was her excellent customer service at a previous employer that launched her into future success.
What attracted me to Harbor Freight was the opportunity that came through recruitment. At the time, I was working at a fast-food restaurant, where I had been since I was 16 years old. The Store Manager from my local Harbor Freight would come through my drive-thru every morning to buy breakfast for her team. Over time, she noticed my great customer service, positive attitude, and the way I always greeted customers with a smile. She told me she appreciated the way I treated people and believed I would be a great fit for Harbor Freight. One day, she offered me to come work for her. That moment opened the door to an incredible opportunity, and I decided to take it. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I made, as it led me to a career that I’ve grown in and truly enjoy.
Eager to Learn: Markisha’s Career Growth
Now 12 years into her career, Markisha reflects on her journey:
I have been with Harbor Freight Tools for 12 years, and my journey with this incredible company has been nothing short of amazing. I started as a cashier, eager to learn and grow. Over the years, I worked my way up, becoming an Assistant Head Cashier, then Head Cashier, then Customer Experience Manager, and now, I proudly serve as a Sales Manager.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working under many different types of leaders. While each experience has taught me something valuable, the leaders I have today have truly shown me what great leadership looks like, providing clear direction, holding accountability, and offering unwavering support. Their guidance has helped shape me into the leader I am today.
I have gained valuable experience in nearly every aspect of the business planograms, pricing, logistics, truck operations, sales, metrics, behaviors, leadership development, role playing, observations, and on-the-spot coaching. More importantly, I have developed strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills that have allowed me to make a meaningful impact on my team and customers and even my business outside of Harbor Freight.
Thriving Personally and Professionally: Markisha’s Passions
Markisha values leading by example when raising her son.
Markisha proudly wears multiple hats in her life: she’s not only an excellent Sales Manager, she also runs a side business as a personal trainer and is a full-time mom to her two-year old son.
When reflecting on her passions outside of work, Markisha says:
Harbor Freight supports my work-life balance by giving me the flexibility to be a dedicated mom, run my own business as a personal trainer, and still take time to travel and enjoy life. The company understands the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life, allowing me to thrive both professionally and personally. I’ve been able to grow my career while still making time for my family and personal passions. It’s just a great company to work for, and I truly appreciate the support and opportunities it provides.
Markisha also reflects on the joys that motherhood provides:
As a mom, I get to experience the most profound kind of leadership shaping my son into the best man he can be. I get to teach him values like perseverance, discipline, kindness, and self-belief, not just through words but by leading by example. Every moment with him is an opportunity to nurture, inspire, and show him what it means to work hard and chase dreams.
